Once upon a time I held you in the back seat of our car A brand new baby doll, pink-faced Tucked into a pillow-cloud You couldn’t see me, I still tried to catch your eye. Taping your little voice, Made up songs of cats and parrots. cheeks of a cherub with golden curls in a white nightgown. And on my bicycle we flew over hills and potholes, your feathery hair kissing my chin; But time went on: I didn't want us to get older; fighting the years dripping incessantly, a leaking tap. Twenty years on I wish I knew you better. I yearn to bridge the gaping void that miles and time sliced into our lives. My blood is still your blood on this long road. |
